Brand Spotlight: Sporty & Rich

There’s no question that sustainability and transparency are changing the ways brands produce, market, and sell clothes. It’s not enough to simply make a great piece, a brand has to have an identity with morals and that perfect “vibe” to stand out. What does that vibe look like? Introducing, Sporty & Rich. We easily fall for an excellent aesthetic, so Sporty & Rich had us hooked from day one. With minimalist athleisure pieces that are as cool as they are timeless, we’re going to give you the low down on the up and coming “it” brand.

The Brains

Let’s start with the creative genius behind it all: Emily Oberg, LA-based art director with over 300,000 Instagram fans. She’s the creator behind the retro-feeling pieces of S&R, taking inspiration from vintage 80s and 90s sport and luxury wear, and fashion icons like Princess Diana, Slim Aaron, and Dieter Rams.

The Brand

The brand started with a visual identity before it had a single product. At first, Emily made Sporty & Rich as a casual reference mood board for photos that inspired her, then it morphed into a print magazine, covered with stunning stills of love, design, and creativity (check out the Sporty & Rich mood page for major LA-cool inspiration). The latest shape of Emily’s artistic expression is thoughtfully designed products, “that emphasize longevity over momentary relevance.” Or for those who tend to forgo the philosophical discussions, cute AF clothes made to last. Bold, bright crewnecks, tees, bags and more (they recently added resistance brands to their offerings). The clothes are branded with the (somehow) already classic S&R logo or simple designs.

The Purpose

Beyond their killer aesthetic Sporty & Rich keep their collections as environmentally friendly as possible. All their pieces (with the exception of hats) are all made in Los Angeles using domestically produced yarn, environmentally friendly grown cotton, and recycled or reclaimed cotton. And best of all, they only take pre-orders in an effort to reduce the obscene amount of waste that usually happens in the fashion industry. Just recently on their IG they revealed H&M has burnt 60 tons of clothes since 2013 alone, and in 2017 Burberry burned $36.8 million (!) worth of merchandise. They are also a member of 1% for the planet, so, you guessed it, 1% of all sales go towards protecting the earth.

For more

As you probably guessed by now, Sporty & Rich aren’t just about making a profit and moving on to the next season. If you can’t wait until the next drop or have already looked over the mood board three million times like we have; check out their wellness off-shoot, Sporty & Rich Wellness, for insightful blog posts about different aspects of health, recipes, a book club, and (what else) a beyond cool aesthetic.

Keep your eye out for their third drop happening on June 1st at 9 am. These drops tend to sell out fast, so you may want to set your alarm.
